Context And Mission


We are seeking an experienced Data Manager to join our Operations team at BSC, to work for the BSC AI Factory. The ideal candidate will be responsible for establishing robust procedures for data ingestion, processing, retention and publication, ensuring that our data meets regulatory standards, and supports the data management for the development, verification and validation of cutting-edge AI solutions in our infrastructure, in collaboration with the other specialized personnel of the AI Factory and its Trusted Research Environment (TRE).


Key Duties


  • Design the data procedures for BSC AI Factory:
    • Develop procedures for classifying, validating, and storing raw data to be consumed by AI processes, in the context of the work for the AI Factory.
    • Collaborate with data engineers to design scalable and sustainable data processes.
    • Ensure data quality and integrity evaluations are available at the point of ingestion and for publication.
  • Establish Data Processing Frameworks:
    • Create standardized processes for transforming and cleaning data.
    • Work closely with AI/ML teams to integrate their requirements into processing workflows.
    • Monitor and optimize data processing tasks to improve efficiency and reduce latency.
  • Define Data Publication Processes:
    • Design methods for publishing processed data to internal and external stakeholders.
    • Ensure published datasets are well-documented, accessible, and compliant with regulations.
    • Develop mechanisms for versioning and tracking changes in published data.
  • Ensure Compliance and Governance:
    • Design the implementation of the data governance policies of BSC, that align with GDPR and other European regulations.
    • Design the management of data access controls to ensure confidentiality and security.
    • Plan the terms of regular audits and reviews of data management processes.
  • Coordinate Cross-Functional Teams:
    • Work closely with infrastructure engineers, AI/ML scientists, researchers, legals, project managers and business stakeholders.
    • Facilitate communication between technical teams and non-technical users.
    • Provide guidance on best practices for data usage and management.
  • Optimize and Innovate
    • Explore the adoption of new technologies and tools to enhance efficiency and scalability of data management.


Requirements


  • Education
    • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field.
    • Master’s degree in data management, project management or related field is preferred
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Deep understanding of the entire data lifecycle, from ingestion to publication, and of the FAIR principles.
    • Proven track record in designing and implementing data ingestion, processing, and data publication procedures
    • Strong knowledge of European data governance frameworks and regulations, for example GDPR, AI Act...
    • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in managing data processes and stakeholders
    • Familiarity with pipelines, data lakes, data spaces, data warehousing, federated learning in AI, and trusted research environment concepts.
  • Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Experience in applying FAIR data principles, metadata standards and data curation.
    • Experience working in a collaborative environment with cross-functional teams (data engineers, AI/ML scientists, etc.).
    • Experience in project management
    • Knowledge of SQL and/or Python for data processing and analysis.
    • Experience working directly with researchers in a scientific setting is a plus.
    • Experience using AI and automated processes to improve data management is a plus.
  • Competences
    • Analytical Thinking: Ability to analyze complex data flows and identify optimization opportunities.
    • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact with both technical and non-technical, research and business stakeholders.
    • Problem-Solving: Strong problem-solving abilities to address challenges in data management for AI.
    • Attention to Detail: Meticulous attention to detail to ensure accuracy and compliance.


Conditions


  • The position will be located at BSC within the Operations Department
  • We offer a full-time contract (37.5h/week), a good working environment, a highly stimulating environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure, flexible working hours, extensive training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance, support to the relocation procedures
  • Duration: Open-ended contract due to technical and scientific activities linked to the project and budget duration
  • Holidays: 23 paid vacation days plus 24th and 31st of December per our collective agreement
  • Salary: we offer a competitive salary commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate and according to the cost of living in Barcelona
  • Starting date: ASAP


Applications procedure and process

  • A cover/motivation letter with a statement of interest in English, clearly specifying for which specific area and topics the applicant wishes to be considered. Additionally, two references for further contacts must be included. Applications without this document will not be considered.

Development of the recruitment process


The selection will be carried out through a competitive examination system ("Concurso-Oposición"). The recruitment process consists of two phases:

  • Curriculum Analysis: Evaluation of previous experience and/or scientific history, degree, training, and other professional information relevant to the position. - 40 points
  • Interview phase: The highest-rated candidates at the curriculum level will be invited to the interview phase, conducted by the corresponding department and Human Resources. In this phase, technical competencies, knowledge, skills, and professional experience related to the position, as well as the required personal competencies, will be evaluated. - 60 points. A minimum of 30 points out of 60 must be obtained to be eligible for the position.

The recruitment panel will be composed of at least three people, ensuring at least 25% representation of women.


In accordance with OTM-R principles, a gender-balanced recruitment panel is formed for each vacancy at the beginning of the process. After reviewing the content of the applications, the panel will begin the interviews, with at least one technical and one administrative interview. At a minimum, a personality questionnaire as well as a technical exercise will be conducted during the process.


The panel will make a final decision, and all individuals who participated in the interview phase will receive feedback with details on the acceptance or rejection of their profile.
