Your Mission
We're looking for an Engineering Manager to lead a team of 6 talented engineers and drive both their professional growth and our product's success. In this role, you'll conduct regular one-on-ones with team members, provide performance coaching, and support their career development through mentorship and growth planning. You'll be hands-on in guiding technical decisions while empowering your team to own their work and develop their skills. The ideal candidate understands that great engineering management is about removing obstacles, fostering collaboration, and creating an environment where engineers can do their best work.
Beyond people management, you'll be a key partner in shaping our product's future. We need someone with a product-first mindset who deeply understands our users' needs and can translate those into technical strategies. You'll work closely with your product counterpart to ensure we're building the right things the right way, balancing technical excellence with practical delivery. Your technical expertise will be crucial in architectural discussions and code reviews, but your primary focus will be enabling your team's success and ensuring our engineering efforts directly contribute to product improvements that matter to our customers.
Key Responsibilities
- Take full ownership of the team’s delivery outcomes, ensuring goals are met with quality and impact.
- Lead, mentor, and support engineers through regular one-on-ones, performance reviews, and tailored career development plans to drive growth and engagement.
- Contribute to and guide technical architecture decisions, reviewing PRDs, RFCs, and code to maintain technical excellence.
- Partner closely with the Product Manager to translate business objectives into clear, actionable technical roadmaps.
- Define and uphold engineering best practices to improve code quality, reduce technical debt, and increase reliability.
- Track, analyze, and continuously improve team performance metrics to boost productivity and collaboration.
- Coordinate effective responses to incidents, ensuring quick resolution and clear communication
About you
- Experienced engineering leader with a strong technical foundation.
- 5+ years of software development experience and at least 4 years in people management.
- Proven track record leading teams through complex technical projects.
- Skilled at balancing competing priorities while keeping team morale and productivity high.
- Up to date technically, able to contribute to architectural discussions and code reviews.
- Focused on enabling and empowering engineers rather than being the main coder.
- Excellent communicator, able to bridge technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Strong writing and documentation skills, with the ability to run effective meetings.
- Comfortable with ambiguity and skilled at guiding teams through uncertainty.
- Calm and decisive during incidents, strategic in planning, and enthusiastic in celebrating wins.
How your first 6 months will look like in this role
First Month
You'll focus on getting to know your team through introductory one-on-ones, understanding each engineer's strengths, challenges, and career aspirations. You'll immerse yourself in our product, codebase, and technical architecture while observing existing team dynamics and processes. By the end of the month, you'll have established regular one-on-one schedules with all team members and begun participating in technical discussions, primarily listening and learning how the team currently operates.
First Three Months
You'll take full ownership of the team's delivery and performance, implementing any necessary process improvements based on your initial observations. You'll have completed your first round of performance reviews and created individual development plans for each team member. By this point, you'll be actively contributing to technical decisions and architectural discussions, while building strong working relationships with product, design, and other engineering teams. You should have a solid grasp of our product roadmap and be helping the team align their work with broader product goals.
First Six Months
You'll have established yourself as a trusted leader who's driving measurable improvements in both team performance and product outcomes. Your team should show clear signs of growth through the career development initiatives you've implemented, and you'll have successfully guided at least one major technical initiative from conception to delivery. By now, you'll be a key voice in product strategy discussions, bringing engineering perspectives that shape our roadmap. The team should be running smoothly under your leadership, with improved velocity, code quality, and most importantly, higher engagement and job satisfaction among your engineers.
