About BSC

The Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, was a founding and hosting member of the former European HPC infrastructure PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe), and is now hosting entity for EuroHPC JU, the Joint Undertaking that leads large-scale investments and HPC provision in Europe. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies in order to facilitate scientific progress. BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D into both computer and computational science (life, earth and engineering sciences) under one roof, and currently has over 1000 staff from 60 countries.

We are particularly interested for this role in the strengths and lived experiences of women and underrepresented groups to help us avoid perpetuating biases and oversights in science and IT research. In instances of equal merit, the incorporation of the under-represented sex will be favoured.

We promote Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, fostering an environment where each and every one of us is appreciated for who we are, regardless of our differences.

If you consider that you do not meet all the requirements, we encourage you to continue applying for the job offer. We value diversity of experiences and skills, and you could bring unique perspectives to our team.

Context And Mission

The Department of Earth Sciences of the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre-Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS), BSC-ES henceforth (https://www.bsc.es/discover-bsc/organisation/scientific-structure/earth-sciences) is one of the most active groups in air quality and atmospheric composition modelling, climate prediction and climate change simulation, climate services, and environmental computational research and engineering in Europe. The Department is currently made of about 250 people, including scientists, technical and support staff. It is structured in four distinct but closely linked research groups: Atmospheric Composition (AC), Climate Variability and Change (CVC), Earth System Services (ESS), and Computational Earth Sciences (CES).

BSC-ES is looking for one person to co-lead the CES group. The CES group is a multidisciplinary team of 85 members with a broad range of scientific and technical profiles that closely interact with all the other BSC-ES groups and ensures contacts with other BSC departments.

The group has two main goals. First, perform state-of-the-art research and development in computing and data analysis for Earth sciences, including high-performance computing efficiency, software for environmental modelling, workflows, data science and artificial intelligence, and any software development required by the weather, climate and air quality communities. The second objective is the guidance on the use of computational and storage resources, with the aim of designing and implementing the requirements of the necessary IT infrastructure for the research teams in the department to develop their research. The achievement of these objectives involves (i) performing cutting-edge research in computational sciences for weather, climate and air quality applications, (ii) designing an IT infrastructure that ensures an efficient working environment for the development of the BSC-ES research and services, (iii) guiding the BSC-ES groups, as well as external partner institutions, to use a collaborative framework and good coding practices (code version control, testing suites, style guides) to improve the work efficiency, the integration of newcomers and the sharing of the tools, and (iv) leading the group in its national and international collaborations while promoting its participation in competitive research projects.

Key Duties

  • Take a leading role in directing the CES group's national and international research activities, and work with the CES team leaders to regularly design a strategy that identifies risks, gaps and opportunities.
  • Conduct cutting-edge research and lead the corresponding publications in collaboration with other leaders.
  • Work with the CES team leaders to manage the group and ensure that opportunities for continuous improvement are provided for team members, while also guaranteeing the group's sustainability.
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of a strategy for the BSC-ES, working closely with the CES group and the other BSC-ES groups.
  • Manage the group's resources and identify and secure funding to ensure its sustainability.
  • Take on a leading role in cutting-edge projects related to the implementation of digital twins and their integration with AI.

Requirements

  • Education
    • An MSc in computer sciences, physics, engineering, mathematics or a related discipline.
  • Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • Experience in leading/managing research and/or engineering projects in computational sciences.
    • Demonstrated experience in managing and developing diverse teams.
    • Proven experience in interacting with internal and external partners.
    • Contribution to the design of the use of IT infrastructures, such as the use of high-performance computing, large data archive systems and software stacks, based on user requirements.
    • Experience in implementing Digital Twins and AI in High Performance Computing (HPC) for Earth Sciences.
    • A consolidated publication record.
    • Fluency in spoken and written English.
  • Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
    • A PhD in a related discipline, although not strictly necessary, will be valued.
    • Knowledge and experience in Earth Sciences model development, data handling and community tools will be valued.
    • Experience in Earth science workflows and experimental set up for experiments performed on high-performance platforms considering both energy or time efficiency is important.
  • Competences
    • Fluency in other European languages will be also valued.
    • Ability to take initiative, prioritize and work under set deadlines and pressure.
    • Capacity to interact and build strong relations with a diverse stakeholder/staff base.
    • Ability to work in a professional environment and within a multidisciplinary research team.
    • Excellent decision-making skills.

Conditions

  • The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department.
  • We offer a full-time contract, a great working environment, a highly stimulating workplace with state-of-the-art infrastructure, flexible working hours, extensive training plan, perks like ticket restaurant and private health insurance, and full support to the relocation process.
  • Duration: Open-ended contract. Salary: A competitive salary commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate and according to the cost of living in Barcelona.
  • Starting date: As soon as possible.

Applications procedure and process

  • A Cover Letter with a statement of interest in English, including two contacts for further references - Applications without this document will not be considered
  • In accordance with the OTM-R principles, a gender-balanced recruitment panel is formed for every vacancy at the beginning of the process. After reviewing the content of the applications, the panel will start the interviews, with at least one technical and one administrative interview. A profile questionnaire as well as a technical exercise may be required during the process.
  • The panel will make a final decision and all candidates who had contacts with them will receive a feedback with details on the acceptance or rejection of their profile.
  • The evaluation criteria will be:

  • The first six aspects will be taken into account for the screening phase.
  • After this, the top candidates ranked will be invited for a presentation/interview with the recruitment panel and then the final scores will be added.
  • Also, the panel will consider Career Breaks (e.g. parental leaves) with an extra 5%. in the recruitment phase.
  • At BSC we are seeking continuous improvement in our recruitment processes, for any suggestions or feedback/complaints about our Recruitment Processes, please contact recruitment [at] bsc [dot] es.
