Job Title: Head of International Freight Operations
Location: Barcelona
Mission statement / Job purpose:
With a strong cross-border focus, the Head of International Freight Operations is responsible for overseeing and optimizing international freight flows from manufacturing entities to markets, covering trade items, samples, and clinical materials. The role also leads global transportation processes supported by Nexus and provides operational support to impacted markets and regions.
Main accountabilities:
- Strategy - Develop and execute comprehensive intercompany order management and international freight strategies aligned with corporate goals. Identify and lead opportunities for process improvements, cost optimization, and service enhancements across the global supply chain.
- Budget Management - Establish and manage the international logistics budget, ensuring cost-efficient operations without compromising service quality or regulatory requirements. Monitor expenditures, analyse variances, and implement corrective actions to stay within targets.
- Operational Efficiency - Deploy best practices across international logistics operations, including organizational setup and workflows. Monitor efficiency through KPIs, maturity assessments, and benchmarking, driving improvements based on data insights and operational feedback.
- Quality & Sustainability - Ensure all international logistics activities—including handling, storage, and transport—comply with GMP standards and sustainability objectives (e.g., CO₂ reduction targets). Participate in audits and inspections to maintain quality, traceability, and compliance.
- Compliance and Regulations - Remain up to date on all applicable laws, regulations, and industry standards related to international logistics and environmental safety. Ensure full compliance in coordination with the Supply Chain Trade Compliance Head and maintain required documentation.
- Technology Integration - Evaluate, implement, and continuously improve system tools and digital platforms that enhance operational visibility and performance. Leverage technology for real-time tracking, automated reporting, and data-driven decision-making.
- Risk Management - Identify and assess risks within international logistics operations, including constraints in distribution practices, routes, or capacity. Develop and maintain robust contingency plans and Business Continuity Plans (BCPs) to mitigate disruptions and ensure service resilience.
- Continuous Improvement - Lead continuous improvement initiatives across international logistics operations and regions. Analyse current-state processes, identify optimization levers, and implement actions that improve efficiency, reduce cost, and enhance customer experience.
- Data Analysis and Reporting - Utilize supply chain analytics and reporting tools to monitor KPIs, track key project milestones, and generate actionable insights on freight and warehousing performance. Provide clear visibility to senior stakeholders and drive data-informed decision-making.
- Team Leadership - Lead a team of X global Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and oversee site-based logistics teams across plants and markets responsible for international logistics execution. Provide strategic direction, foster collaboration, and ensure the professional development and high performance of the team.
Critical Skills / Competences
- Proven organizational, communication, and leadership excellence, demonstrated through a track record of delivering results in complex, global environments.
- In-depth knowledge of international logistics regulations, trade compliance, and relevant industry standards.
- Broad understanding of key operational disciplines, including finance, customer service, manufacturing, supply chain, and people management.
- Strong ability to design and implement agile structures, roles, and processes that drive speed, efficiency, and adaptability in a dynamic business context.
Required education / Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years’ experience in logistics and supply chain management, including at least 5 years in a senior global leadership role with a focus on cross-border trade.
- Proficient in key supply chain systems such as ERP, WMS, and TMS, with experience in analytics and performance tools (e.g., Power BI).
- Proven track record in budget management, business planning, and cost optimization.
- Strong negotiation and stakeholder management skills, both internally and with global logistics partners.
- Lean Six Sigma certification or demonstrated experience in driving continuous improvement and operational excellence
- Fluency in English is required; proficiency in other European languages is a plus.
