We, in the Data Platforms Reliability Engineering & Operations team, are searching for an enthusiastic Senior Infrastructure Engineer who is ready for an exciting career!
About the Team
Our team focuses on the reliability engineering of Swiss Re's data platform (called Stargate), holding more than 9 Petabytes of data. Our systems process hundreds of billions of rows on a day-to-day basis, whilst daily consuming multiple terabytes from other data-source systems. Our mission is to optimize data ingestion, Big Data and AI pipelines, improving their reliability and performance, while guiding thousands of customers on how to make the best use of these capabilities to drive better business decisions.
The team is composed by individuals from a plurality of Backgrounds, from core Java Netty Contributors to PhDs in Mathematics. The diversity of technical knowledge on high-performance computing areas is what makes us stronger and more effective.
We reserve time for studying, building knowledge, attending conferences, and we organize our own upskilling sessions as well. In addition to Swiss Re internal projects, we also work on innovation projects/hackathons which allow us to learn new methodologies and gain fresh experience.
The ideal candidate will eventually take full responsibility and leadership of the infrastructure tasks in the team, potentially including people management, making sure our infrastructure systems are efficiently fine-tuned to its needs.
About the Role
The team participates in a variety of interesting initiatives. Among the ones that the candidate will work on are:
- Architecting, optimizing and configuring terabyte-scale ingestions in a day-to-day basis. Stargate is a polyglot platform running on a multi-cloud environment, ready to consume data from plural sources including REST endpoints, Azure blob storages or billion-rows large Relational Databases. You will create and maintain VMs and deployments to keep these processes within business expectations, delivering resilient infrastructure while using a FinOps hat.
- Designing, implementing and maintaining network infrastructure to handle terabytes of daily traffic[EF1] in an efficient manner. You will work together with dedicated network teams, collecting metrics and doing data-driven decisions to improve Platform User Experience on a global level.
- Extending and Improving Immutable Infrastructure used to ingest thousands of a data-sources daily in a multi-cloud environment. The team works on improving ingestion infrastructure resilience, which means creating methods to avoid configuration-drifts and reducing maintenance windows. This comes together with ensuring that the cloud is efficiently provisioned and configured.
- Promoting, implementing and aiding internal customers with their ingestions. The team often mentors many different type of integration scenarios based on multiple customer requirements. Typically engaging with the internal clients and helping them finding the best method to materialize their business requirements, during L3 operations.
About You
Nobody is perfect and meets 100% of requirements. If you however meet some of the criteria below and are genuinely passionate about the challenges of global scale infrastructure engineering, we will be happy to meet you.
In order to be successful in the role, you need to ideally have these technical skills and knowledge:
- Degree in Computer Science/Engineering or proven track of experience in the field.

- AWS / Azure certificates, ideally Architect level.
If you also have the following experiences, it is a huge plus:
- Kernel performance engineering
- Big Data technologies and further algorithms
